We all like buying our food from supermarkets, don't we? They are so convenient compared to ______________ main street stores and markets. And it offers so many choices. Everything is available all year around. Supermarkets label the food, so we can choose healthy ______________ for our families. And they are clean and friendly. People can be very loyal to their favorite supermarket, almost like soccer fans. And naturally, the supermarkets love it. But, is there a downside? The significant number of people are starting to turn against the ______________ of the supermarket. In some countries, people continue to choose the traditional over the modern, rejecting the supermarket culture in favor of a local approach. Why? What problems may our love affair with supermarkets cause? Well, in Britain alone, around 13 thousand ______________ stores closed down in the five years from 1998 to 2003, and many people claim that this is a direct result of the growth of supermarkets. Figures suggest that by 2050, there may be no more independent stores in Britain. If we want to save the traditional grocer, butcher, and baker, we have to start using them. Another problem is waste. Experts point out that 35 to 40 percent of our household waste is ______________ and almost all of that is supermarket packaging. They say that if we want to reduce the waste that is harming our environment, supermarkets must cut this figure ______________ , and they must do it soon. We may lose labels, but we will be able to smell and choose our fruit for ourselves. And there is the farming and ______________ . Supermarkets need huge quantities of nearly identical produces to be efficient. Where is food used to be grown nearby in season and driven to the local stores and markets? The supermarkets take over huge areas of land and produce food for the whole developed world, flying it around the planet. Again, the evidence suggests that this is not good. And do we really need ______________ all year around? Can’t we learn to enjoy the seasonal traits that the local farming brings once again? But the supermarkets rightly point out that people live busy lives. And they choose to shop at the supermarkets, because they save time, provide choices and make their lives easier. Maybe the answer will lie in finding a ______________ . We have to find a way in which supermarkets, independent stores and markets can live together, sustaining untraditional means in our busy lives while maintaining local and ______________ food traditions and cutting down our environmental costs.
