The movie Titanic is a great success. It’s about the romantic story between Jack and Rose. Do you know the story of the big ship Titanic? The ship left for the U.S. from Britain on April 14, 1912. It was the largest ship in the world and was considered the safest. There were 16 watertight compartments at the bottom of the ship. People believed that even if 4 compartments were filled with water, the ship would not sink. After midnight of the first day, the Titanic hit an iceberg. The iceberg made a hole in 5 compartments so the ship began to sink. There were 2,224 people on the ship. There were 1,178 life rafts but there was not enough time for everyone to get into them. 1,513 people died that night and the next morning. Only 20 miles away, there was a ship called Californian. When the radio operator of the Titanic sent a message, there was no response because the radio operator of the Californian was asleep. Another ship called the Cunard did hear the message. It arrived 20 minutes after the Titanic sank. The loss of so many people caused the U.S. and Britain to meet at the first International Conference for Safety of Life at Sea. They decided that there should be rules for every ship at sea. 1. There must be space for every person on a lifeboat in case a ship sinks. 2. Lifeboat drills (训练) for safety must be required so passengers will know how to save themselves in emergency. 3. Ships must have more than one radio operator so someone is always awake to receive messages 24 hours a day.
