When Charles II died in 1685 and, leaving no le gitimate heir, his power was succeeded by his brot her, James II (1685-1688) who hoped to be able to r ule without giving up his Catholic faiths. But the English politicians rejected James II, and appeale d to a Protestant king, William of Orange, James’s Dutch nephew and the husband of Mary, James’s dau ghter, to invade and take the English throne.
