Catalytic RNAs have the same structural and functional diversity as do protein enzymes; they are, after all, built from only four different subunits. Nonetheless, ribozymes can catalyze many types of chemical reactions. Although relatively few catalytic RNAs operate in present-day cells, they play major roles in some of the most fundamental steps in the expression of genetic information—specifically those steps where RNA molecules themselves are spliced or translated into protein.
