For a band so early on in their undoubtedly fruitful future career, ‘Caregiver’ sounds so forlorn and final that when listening it almost feels like Memoryhouse are playing out their epitaph right before our very eyes. On what is perhaps their most accomplished work to date, the new single sees the band employ the additional talents of touring guitarist Adrian Vieni to stunning effect. His flourishes of lead guitar act as the perfect counterbalance to Denise Nouivon’s yearning croon. From start to end, it’s a genuinely heartbreaking experience; everything about it feels so final – a song that could quite as easily soundtrack the closing sequence of a sad movie as it could the loss of a loved one. Quite what Memoryhouse are saying goodbye to is anyones guess, but as Nouivon sings “leaving another ghost behind” the meaning of the song is irrelevant. Without trying to sound too cliché; occasionally we all need a song to visit when feeling at a loss, hopeless or downtrodden – a hand on your shoulder when that of a loved one just won’t do.
