Read the following short passage and choose the best answer. There was a large degree of male chauvinism in ancient Chinese society. Even the earliest Chinese poetry book (Book of Odes) tended to favor male over female. Today, many people still favor giving birth to a son, rather than a daughter. In traditional Chinese culture, as influenced by Confucian family ancestry lineage, a son is favored because he is able to carry on the lineage to the next generation. A daughter in turn is thought to be “married out of the family”, like the water thrown out of the bucket, never to return.
