二. 语法填空( 2 ) March 5, 2020 P.E.: Pretty Extraordinary “ 我的数学是体育老师教的。 ”—— 请摘下你的有色眼镜,体育老师不 “ 背锅 YOU cannot judge a book by looking at its cover, and neither can you judge a good class teacher by looking at her degree. That’s what a group of parents and students in Hangzhou has found out this semester. When they came to school in September, the students 1 (shock) to learn that their class teacher was to be a P.E. teacher. How could a teacher 2 brain was just a big muscle help them improve their studies? How could someone who teaches badminton and basketball know anything about academics? Their parents were equally horrified and pressured the school 3 (replace) “Miss Muscle” with a “Miss Brain.” However, the principal did not give in 4 the pressure and now the parents and students are happy that the school firmly insisted. After three months, “Miss Muscle,” whose name is actually Miss Su, has turned out to be a wonderful class teacher. She is intelligent, kind and helpful. She is a good leader who keeps her students 5 (motivate) in their studies and involved in school activities. And she has won the parents over with her genuine concern for their children. In other words, Miss Su, the P.E. teacher, is “pretty extraordinary.” The initial negative 6 (react) against Miss Su is an example of bias ( 偏见 ). A “bias” is an error in thinking that affects a person’s opinions and decisions. Similarly, women have a difficult time 7 (climb) the career ladder ( 职位晋升的阶梯 ) because their bosses (mostly men!) think that women lack leadership skills and the necessary toughness to make difficult decisions. Neither of these opinions is based 8 facts or the talents of the individual. They’re just bias. We are all biased in one way or another. We get them from our upbringing ( 家教 ), the media and even our education, but with a little effort, we can overcome our bias. The first thing to do is recognize that we have a bias. Then we should examine 9 (we) opinions and judgments to see if they are really based on facts. In the case of Miss Su, the parents and students let their bias about P.E. teachers cloud ( 蒙蔽 ) their judgment and, 10 (initial) at least, refused to see her talent and good character. Fortunately, they managed to correct their bias and now have a pretty extraordinary class teacher. And that’s my honest unbiased opinion. (选自ChinaDaily)
