Schoolmasters are given more and more 4 to run their schools. And p arents , too , have more and more choices regarding the types of school they wish to send their children to. While many parents are trying to send their children to good schools, both private and public, some parents prefer to keep their children at home , opting out altogether, in other words, to educate their children at home. Here we are with a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chen. Mr. and Mrs. Chen have a daughter. She is 12 years old. Now, Mr. Chen , why do you want to teach your daughter at home? Mr. Chen: We made the decision after reading a book about education. The book says that we should understand education in a broad sense. Education is 5 . Educators should care about the student's development, physical, intellectual and psychological. It does not mean that schooling must take place in the buildings on campus. It could be anywhere as long as educators can 6 . And o ur decision is also colored by my experience of schooling. I had always been unhappy at school. So when I had a daughter, a lovely girl , I promised myself that if ever my daughter felt the same as me about schooling, I would do something positive about it. Presenter: But w e have noticed that the teachers at school are much better than before as far as qualifications are concerned. They receive very good training in the profession. A nd w hat's more, teaching children, especially at the primary level, needs expertise. Mrs. Chen Yes, you’re right. We do find it is not easy to teach a child. To make our job more difficult, my husband and I are not trained teachers. He used to be 7 and I am a nurse at the local hospital. He's now taken the responsibility almost full time. He took up the job of designing web home pages for customers in order to fit in with home education. Presenter: Then how do you teach your daughter? Do you follow 8 ? Mr. Chen : Well, as my wife said, we are not trained teachers so we are not familiar with the national curriculum. But w e teach our girl in the belief that we should give her what she needs. We have no timetable for lessons and we find no fixed textbooks. I teach an y thing as long as my daughter has interest in it. For example, she's interested in drama. I took her to the theatres and she watched the rehearsal of the local artists. Last week , she studied several play scripts in the local library, and even wrote her first drama. It was a wonderful work . She said she would invite some friends to put it on the stage. And h er ambition is to become a playwright in the future. Mrs. Chen : As a matter of fact, we find our daughter is excellent in both reading and writing now. When she showed her first drama work to a director, he said it was superb for a girl of 12 years old and encouraged her to write more. Presenter: That’s wonderful, but how do you know that your teaching is able to meet the standard? Mrs. Chen : We are also 9 . The inspectors visit us once every two months. They are quite pleased, but we have been told to strengthen the science side. We told them that our daughter did not have any interest in that at the moment. If she did, we would certainly do something about it and we may even pay a private tutor if necessary. There is no limit to what we can do. Presenter: What is your plan for the future? Mr. Chen: We have some ideas about the short term goals and long term goals. We don't think our method of education can totally replace school education. Our short term goal is 10 . Our long term goal is that our daughter would become a useful, creative, and decent person in society. Presenter: Thank your very much, Mr. and Mrs. Chen , for talking to our listeners.
