Passage 2 Look around you. What makes a positive attitude, and how can you recognize one? Is it the team player in your study group who offers to share his notes? Is it the girl in your chemistry class who lags two experiments behind everyone else, but still keeps smiling? The answer is both. Positive attitudes can be shown in different ways by different people. People who are positive may be the yearbook editor, the quiet boy in French class who helps you with verbs, or your tough but fair swimming coach. Positive people have one thing in common: optimism — for themselves and for their undertakings. They respond to daily life in a positive way. That is why their chance of achieving career and life success is much higher than if they have a negative attitude. Teachers believe that if you are upbeat( 乐观的 ) and conscientious as a teenager, you will probably have that same optimistic inner drive as a working adult. Also, attitude may be a greater factor in achieving success than academic achievement or job skills, which is important to know as you face the job market. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have confirmed this notion( 观念 ). Most of the employers they interviewed said dependability ( 可靠性 ), "proper attitude," and team spirit were the main criteria ( 标准 ) used for hiring. And what is a positive work attitude? Business consultant Steven Gaffney lists these five components ( 部分 ): * Know your strengths. * Set goals. * Recognize and accept mistakes. * Be willing to learn. * Do what needs to be done, rather than just plan.
