An 18-year-old woman was running across some rough ground when she stumbled and over inverted her left foot. On examination in the emergency department of the localhospital, the lateral side of the left ankle was tender and swollen. A small area of great tenderness was found below and in front of the lateral malleolus. X-ray examination of the ankle joint was negative. A diagnosis of sprain of the left ankle was made. The following facts concerning this patient are correct except
A.
The movement of inversion of the foot takes place at the ankle joint.
B.
Over inversion places a strain on the lateral ligaments of the ankle joint.
C.
The localized tenderness felt below and in front of the lateral malleolus would indicate that some of the fibers of the anterior talofibular ligament had been torn.
D.
The resulting hemorrhage from the torn ligament was responsible for the swelling in the area.
E.
By immobilizing the ankle joint with adequate splinting, the torn fibers of the anterior talofibular ligament are repaired with new fibrous tissue.
