The following is the Introduction chapter of a BA thesis entitled “ A study on sexism in English Language ”. Study it carefully, and provide suggestions for its improvement (Do not rewrite it. Just give some suggestions with details). Sexism, according to Oxford Advanced Learners English-Chinese Dictionary (1994), means "disapproving action based on the ideas or belief that the members of one sex are less intelligent, able and skillful, etc., than the members of the other sex, especially that women are less capable than men and those particular jobs and actions are suitable for women and others are suitable for men." Sexism in the English language refers to English expressing sexist assumptions about differences between men and women as in the prejudicial use of female or male words. Sexist language expresses unfair assumptions and differences, and it can be either explicit, as in the prejudicial use of male or female pronouns, or implicit. Using evidences, the thesis here reveals how often English expresses sexist assumptions about differences between men and women. As we all know, language has a close relationship with social life, and is used in a specific social group. It is not only the carrier of the ideological content. but a mirror of social life. It reveals people's traditional thoughts of sex discrimination against women in society. From the development and changes of language, it can be concluded that sex discrimination is not an exclusive phenomenon in a specific country, but a worldwide one.
