In contrast to maltose and lactose, sucrose contains no free anomeric carbon atom; the anomeric carbons of both monosaccharide units are involved in the glycosidic bond. Sucrose is therefore a reducing sugar, and its stability—its resistance to oxidation—makes it a suitable molecule for the storage and transport of energy in plants.
