Smoke or Fire in the Cockpit In the cockpit, smoke or fire is a serious emergency which will be caused generally by a short circuit or other electrical malfunctions. This will lead to heavy smoke and open fire in the cabin, and the consequences will possibly be very serious. When viewing cockpit instruments and outside, the visibility of the pilot may be considerably limited, as a result, the aircraft may be totally reliant on ATC instructions. The pilots should be calm in this situation. For them, to keep control of the airplane is always the first priority. Then, it is necessary for the flight crew, cabin members and passengers to put on oxygen masks in presence of smoke or poisonous gases. At this moment, the pilot should report the distress to ATC, start emergency descent and make immediate landing. On the other hand, the air traffic controller should assist resolution of the situation by informing supervisor, asking for dangerous goods and number of persons on board (POB), and informing landing aerodrome, besides, he should also clear RWY when ACFT is 25 NM final, keep safety strip clear, and keep APP/RWY lighting system 100%. All these measures are taken for assisting resolution of the situation, too. The pilot should be informed by the air traffic controller about miles tracked until touchdown at next suitable aerodrome, availability of automatic approach low visibility procedure, the pilot should be informed also about details of landing aerodrome such as runway in use, length, surface, elevation, ILS and NAV - frequencies and weather information of landing aerodrome which includes wind, visibility, ceiling and QNH.
