But finding your way around and trying to communicate in a foreign language can be difficult, So having a good travel guide can help you a lot. The idea for one of the most popular independent travel guides Lonely Planet came when a young married couple, Tony and Maureen Wheeler went travelling across Asia back in the early 1970s. So many people asked them questions about their trip that they decided to create a travel guide, which they called Across Asia on the Cheap. They produced the book themselves at their kitchen table and it became a huge success. Their second guidebook south-east Asia on a Shoestring is one of the most popular guidebooks ever published. The success of the first two books gave the Wheelers enough money to continue travelling across the world. South-east Asia was followed by Nepal and Trekking in the Himalayas in 1976 and then came guides to Australia, Europe, Africa and New Zealand in 1977 and India in 1981 The idea for the name Lonely Planet came from a line in the song Space Captain by Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. The actual words in the song are Lovely Planet but Tony Wheeler heard Lonely Planet, liked it and it became the name of their popular series of guidebooks Now, with the help of over 400 employees in Melbourne, Oakland, London and Paris and a group of about 150 experienced writers traveing ang writing around the globe, the Wheelers have published over 650 guidebooks in 14 languages Tony Wheeler himself has contributed to and written over 20 guidebooks and was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Travel Journalism award in 2000 and The British Guild of Travel writer's life-time Achievement Award in 2002. The New York Times has described him as the most important man in travel. Maureen Wheeler was awarded the Inspiring Woman of Australia Award in 1999, and was given an honorary degree by the University of Ulster. She was also voted Business Woman of the Year in 2001 The Wheelers still own the company and their success has not stopped them doing what they love most-travelling.
