At a young age, Gates showed great interest in computers and, as a result of his family’s wealth, he was able to use computers at a time when few children or adults could. He made his first program for computers when he was 13 years old. While he was still in high school, he and a friend started a company which made traffic counting systems for counting cars and trucks, and helped computerize his school’s salary system. In 1973, Gates arrived at Harvard University. There, he developed a version of a programming language for computers. Gates was a very intelligent student, but he didn’t graduate. In his third year, Gates left university in order to work at his new company: Microsoft. He started this company with his childhood friend, Bill Allen. They believed that the computer would become an important tool for every office and every home. So they started developing software for personal computers. To us now, this seems normal, but at that time, it was very innovative thinking. Microsoft soon became one of the largest and most important computer software companies in the world. It produced products such as MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. Bill Gates became one of the richest and most influential entrepreneurs in the world. However, he had problems because many people thought that Microsoft used unfair business practices against other companies. Bill Gates was married in 1994. He has three children and the family lives in a big house in Washington State. Gates and his wife give a huge amount of money to charity. They give a lot of money to poor students as well as for AIDS prevention and relief of other diseases in poor countries.
