This spring, I will earn my Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Women’s Studies. This field is something I’m really interested in. It has widened my 1) and made me a better person. I have a better understanding of others and how our daily lives are 2) . I think my education is very important and that’s why it bothers me when people tell me that my field of study isn’t as important as the STEM field, that is, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I’m not going to say which is better. STEM and the humanities are like apples and oranges. They simply do not 3) to one another. STEM is important, that’s how we get our medicines, our technology and many more things we take for granted. But the humanities are important too: Without them we wouldn’t have 4) workers, teachers and artists. Our society values discussions based around facts rather than emotion. Our society values 5) being black or white. Our society values 6) . The humanities are seen as less important because a lot of times there is no “true” answer. There is no objectivity. In the humanities we 7) emotions, and other things that are seen as feminine. I don’t think my 8) of helping others in my local community any less important than the non-humanities. They’re just 9) . Both are necessary in our society, so can we stop making them 10) against each other?
