Having benefited from the apartheid system, the Boks hardly question its morality. In fact, Mahree's father, a policeman, is happy when the anti-apartheid black activist Steve Biko is imprisoned. In contrast, Piper Dellums is a black girl who lives with her parents and 2 brothers in Washington, D.C, US. Her father, Ron Dellums, a congressman, strongly opposes the apartheid system of South Africa and speaks openly for the oppressed black South Africans. Mahree is going to the US for one semester as an exchange student, while Piper, who is interested in African cultures, asks her parents to host an African exchange student who later turns out to be Mahree.
