Directions: This section is designed to test your ability to understand spoken English. You will hear a selection of recorded materials and you must answer the questions that accompany them. There are TWO parts in this section, Part A and Part B. Remember, while you are doing the test, you should first put down your answers in your test booklet. At the end of the listening comprehension section, you will have 3 minutes to transfer your answers from your test booklet onto ANSWER SHEET 1. If you have arty questions, you may raise your hand NOW as you will not be allowed to speak once the test has started. Part A You will hear 10 short dialogues. For each dialogue, there is one question and four possible answers. Choose the correct answer —A, B, C or D, and mark it in your test booklet. You will have 15 seconds to answer the question and you will hear each dialogue ONLY ONCE. Question 1: W: I can't make it now. Is tomorrow evening all right? M: I guess so. The movie will be here through next week. Question 2: W: The hours are 9 to 12 Monday through Friday. M: Is there any paid vacation? Question 3: W : I can't believe it's raining again. M: Three weeks without a change is pretty boring. W: It's the typical weather in London. Question 4: W: You took an optional course this semester, didn't you? How is it going? M: Terrible! It seems like the more the professor talks, the less I understand. Question 5: M: Excuse me. I'd like to place an advertisement for a used car in the Sunday edition of your paper. W: OK, but you have to run your advertisement all week. We don' t quote rates for just Sunday. Question 6: W: The mechanic said it would cost 300 dollars to have the car repaired. M: We might as well spend 300 dollars more to buy a new one then. Question 7: M: We'll go for an outing tomorrow. Would you like to join us? W: I'd like to, but I think it's going to rain. The temperature is dropping. M: You can't be right. The weather forecast says fine weather for tomorrow. W: I hope so. But I won't take the risk. Thanks for asking. Question 8: M: My library book is eight days overdue. Can you tell me how much I owe you? W: 8 cents a day. M: Ok. Here's the money. Question 9 : W: Well, this must be the National Library. M: I guess so. Oh no! I don't think it's open today. Look. It says 'Closed Tuesdays'. W: Well, we'll just have to come back tomorrow. M: But we're supposed to go on that tour tomorrow. W: Oh, that' s fight. I forgot all about it. How about the day after tomorrow then? M: It's OK with me. Question 10: M: How did your interview go? W: I couldn't feel better about it. M: You weren't nervous, were you? W: Not at all. The interviewer was very friendly. Now look at question 1. What are these people planning to do? [A] To see a movie. [B] To make some coffee.
