Dick was born in a farmer ’ s family. When he was old enough to go to school, his father take him to a school near his home. But Dick liked playing and was not good at his lessons. What was worse, he often caused so many troubles that the teachers often came to talk with his father. When he grew up, he didn ’ t like to be a farmer. He left the poor village and came to the city. On the train he got to know a young man called Jim. They became good friends soon. They could not find any work in the city. They had to beg from door to door in the daytime and sleep on the chairs in the park at night. The weather was warm and they always thought they had a wonderful time. But one evening a shop near the park was broken into. The policemen went there at once. They found the two young men in the park and took them to the police station( 警察局 ). “ Where do you live, young man? ” asked a policeman. “ I live everywhere, sir, ” answered Dick. “ The fields, the hills, the parks ...” The policeman stopped and turned to Jim. “ And where do you live? ” “ We are neighbors, ” answered Jim. “ I live next door to him. ”
