Jacob Turner's definition for AI is "the ability of a non-natural entity to make choices by an evaluative process". The term "robot" refers to "a physical entity or system which uses AI". As to the "artificial" part of the definition, "non-natural" is preferable to "man-made" because of the propensity of AI to design & create other AI. At some point, mankind may drop out of the picture.

Ray Kurzweil wrote in 1992 that the most durable definition of AI is "the art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people".

Bertram Raphael in 1976 defined AI as "the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by man".

John McCarthy, the inventor of the term AI, has defined AI as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines".
