Passage B An Interview with James Cameron about His Epic Adventure Avatar Many years ago, writer-director James Cameron made Titanic, an epic romance that became the highest-grossing film in Hollywood history. A few years later he made cinema history again with new 3D technology that puts audiences in the middle of his new science fiction adventure set on another world and 150 years in the future. Here’s an interview with James Cameron about Avatar. (R — Reporter; JC — James Cameron) R : Can you tell me what the film is about? JC : Well, it’s about this planet, where humans are battling the native species for control of a valuable resource. The protagonist — the hero — is this guy who, using DNA technology, creates a shell that looks like one of the natives. So he remotely takes control of this shell, or “avatar” and goes undercover, as a spy for the humans. And as the story develops, maybe it turns out that everything isn’t quite what it first seemed. R : How did you come up with this story? JC : Well, my inspiration is every single science fiction book I read as a kid. And a few that weren’t science fiction. I wanted to do an old fashioned jungle adventure, just set it on another planet, and play by those rules. R : Is it true you have developed a whole culture and even a whole language for the aliens in this movie? JC : Absolutely. We have this indigenous population of humanoid beings who are living at a relatively Neolithic level; they hunt with bows and arrows. They live very closely and harmoniously with their environment, but they are also quite threatening to the humans who are trying to colonise and mine and exploit this planet. R : Being one of the most innovative filmmakers today do you feel the pressure of having to top yourself every time out? JC : You’ve got to eat pressure for breakfast if you’re going to do this job. I mean I think you have to ask yourself a lot of hard questions while you’re making it. At the same time you can’t make a movie for everybody because that’s the kiss of death. You have to make a movie for yourself. Words and phrases:
