An 18-year-old woman wasrunning across some rough ground when she stumbled and overinverted her leftfoot. On examination in the emergency department of the local hospital, the lateralside of the left ankle was tender and swollen. A small area of great tendernesswas found below and in front of the lateral malleolus. X-ray examination of theankle joint was negative. A diagnosis of sprain of the left ankle was made.
