A: Oh dear, I’m sorry to hear that. Here’s a pain chart so you can explain your pain better. B: All right. A: Where’s the pain, Sara? B: There are three areas which hurt. A: OK. Can you tell me on a scale of nought to ten what is the worst pain you’ve had in the last twenty-four hours in each area? B: OK. A: Can you show me the first one on the picture of the body? B: It’s my chest. A: OK. What’s the pain in your chest like? B: It’s a sharp pain. A: What sets the pain off? B: It starts when I cough. A: How bad is the pain right now? B: Er, four, I think. A: OK. I’ll label that pain ‘A’. What do you take for the pain? B: The painkiller helps and massage is good, too. A: OK. What about the next area? B: My lower back. It’s the worst pain. A: Mm. It’s where your main tumor is, isn’t it? B: Yes. My back aches a lot. A: I’ll label that pain ‘B’. How’s the back pain now? B: It’s eight at the moment. A: When does it get worse? B: When I lie down or sit in a chair. A: Does the medication help? B: A little but not much. A: That’s not good. I’ll tell the doctor about that. You might need some stronger analgesia. What about the last area of pain? B: The right knee ulcer. A: OK. That’s ‘C’. What triggers the pain in your knee? B: It only hurts when the dressing’s changed. A: What’s the pain like? B: It’s sharp. About three out of ten. A: What helps the pain? B: Those non-stick dressing are good. And I have painkillers before the nurse does the dressing.
